Back Pain Definition

It is considered the low back pain located in the lower back, lumbar region. Lumbago (back strain) is defined as a new and severe pain occurred suddenly in the kidney area. The patient states often have pain in the bar and bright, like a pike.

Back Pain Causes

The causes of acute pain in the region of the lower back and kidneys (low back) are numerous. They can be physical or psychological.
Lumbago usually appears after an uncontrolled movement of the back like sit up, stand up or turn, or carry a heavy object improperly bad.

This results in an immediate muscle contraction (= severe pain) in the lower back. Muscle contraction may also result from stress, overwork, influenza infection (cooling), the little muscles trained, overweight and other unfavorable factors.

The main causes of low back pain are:

The muscles in the lower back are then strongly contracted and hard. The pain can sometimes extend into the feet. Mobility is greatly reduced pain. In some cases, the pain is so intense that the recovery of the upper body is impossible.

In most cases, lumbago, though painful, is harmless. However, if the patient feels numbness in the legs, or difficulty in urinating or defecating, it is imperative to consult a doctor.

If the pain radiates through the buttocks into the leg – along the sciatic nerve – then sciatica. This is another disease that has nothing to do with lumbago – even if the patient experiences it as such at the beginning (see Disease – Sciatica).

Back Pain Diagnosis

The sudden onset of pain as the facts have caused (eg an awkward movement) are already signs that allow the doctor to suggest a diagnosis.

To exclude other diseases, the doctor may request a radiograph of the spine. If an intervertebral disc involvement is suspected, it is recommended to perform an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT (computed tomography).

The conduct of the examination can appear as :

  • Medical history including disturbances and movements prior to the event or pain
  • Physical examination: inappropriate body posture, injuries, disorders of perception as a tingling or numbness (neurological tests)
  • Radiography of the spine
  • When a suspicion of a lesion of the intervertebral disc, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or CT (computed tomography)

Back Pain Treatment Options

In lumbago (back strain), it is necessary to first take care of the pain. The most common painkillers are given orally or intravenously. In addition, physical methods such as the application of heat, for example with mud packs or infrared, are beneficial. Electrical treatment, massage and physical therapy to help contraction muscle.

It is important to follow a program even after the reduction of pain, it helps to form the positioning of the back and his movements. The patient learns, among other things, how to carry heavy objects without hurting his back, and how to protect the movements and exercises strengthen the muscles.

In general, problems diminish relatively quickly. Once the pain reduced, it is important to practice a sport that protect the back by means of stretching exercises to prevent that from happening again lumbago.
If the pain does not disappear after a few days, it is necessary to go to be examined by a doctor. If the problem is of an intervertebral disc, surgery may be necessary.

Back Pain Preventive Measures

  • Learning of movement: how to carry heavy objects
  • Regular sports activities protecting, strengthening and stretching the back
  • Reduction of overweight
  • Avoid tiring posture back
  • Recognize and treat emotional tensions. They often manifest as muscle contractions or pain in the neck.
  • Reduce stress, possibly perform relaxation exercises like yoga, autogenic training, etc..
