Symptoms

The main symptom of infertility is the inability for a woman to get pregnant. In some cases where a woman has a history of abnormal menstrual periods and where a man has problems like hormonal problems or sexual dysfunction, then there can be a problem to conceive. In such cases even after trying for 6 to 12 months of unprotected sex the couple cannot get pregnant then they have to consult the doctor for further treatment of conceiving a baby. If a woman is more than 35 years of age and if she had a miscarriage, then she has to go to a gynecologist for consultation or treatment. If a man has a low sperm count then there is a possibility of not conceiving a child without treatment.

Causes of infertility

There are many factors which result in infertility and are found in both men and women. The main cause of infertility among men is the sperm count. The reasons of low sperm count can be hormonal imbalance, poor nutrition, obesity, sexual problems, frequent exposure to heat, premature ejaculation, excess alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The main reasons for infertility among women are blockage or damage of fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, hormonal imbalance, early menopause and irregular menstrual cycle. Some medications, thyroid problems, cancer and its treatment may affect a woman’s ability to reproduce.

Treatment

Treatment of infertility depends on the cause of infertility and also the age of the couple. Some fertility treatments include counseling and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Fertility drugs are prescribed to women who are infertile with ovulation disorders. Surgery may be an option in blockages of fallopian tubes. Another technique is assisted reproductive technology (ART) where fertilization takes place outside the body and is reinserted into a woman’s reproductive tract, which is called embryo transfer. Surrogacy is another arrangement where a woman carries and delivers a child for another woman because the couple is unable to carry and deliver the child normally. These were some facts regarding infertility and how to treat infertility in a couple looking to conceive a baby.
