Thrush Definition

The vaginal mucosa is far from a barren area. Indeed, it is colonized by a large amount of bacteria and fungi varied, which normally live in harmony and form an ecosystem. In women healthy sexually active, lactobacilli or lactic acid bacteria predominate.

The main function of these bacteria is to convert glycogen found in the cells of the vagina into lactic acid, which acidifies the vaginal environment. This acidic environment prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi. Several factors can disrupt this vaginal ecosystem and promote the development of fungi.

Half of women suffer at least once in their lives of yeast infection.

Thrush Causes

When the vaginal ecosystem is disrupted and the number of lactobacilli decreases and that of fungi increases, a yeast infection can occur and cause symptoms. Most often, they are yeast-like Candida albicans are responsible.

Thrush Risk factors that may disturb the ecosystem:

  • Poor personal hygiene (mushrooms are often fecal and brought to the vaginal area)
  • An excessive vaginal hygiene can also destroy the normal flora
  • Weakened immune system
  • Changing hormone levels by taking oral contraceptives
  • Pregnancy or menopause
  • Medication with cortisone and antibiotics
  • Diabetic disease, diabetes mellitus
  • Unprotected sex.

Thrush Disorders (symptoms)

The intensity of symptoms can vary from one woman to another:

  • Redness and swelling of genitals
  • Burns (when the emission of urine or sex).
  • High losses of creamy white
  • Foul-smelling discharge

Examinations (diagnosis)

  • History taking into account the patient’s symptoms
  • Gynecological examination
  • Smear with cultivation
  • In case of repeated fungal infections, it should conduct an examination of the stool.

Thrush Treatment Options

The yeast infection is treated by administration of antifungal drugs. These medicines are available as tablets or suppositories.

Frequent fungal infections can be prevented by the administration of vaginal suppositories containing lactobacilli. Swabs can sometimes plain yogurt to rebalance the vaginal environment.

Thrush Possible Complications

In principle, a yeast infection is not dangerous and often heals spontaneously. It is nevertheless advisable if pregnant or first onset of symptoms to consult a doctor for appropriate treatment. It is also important to treat the partner under penalty of recontamination. In men, the disease is often asymptomatic and the symptoms usually appear only when massive infection. It is essential to respect the duration of treatment prescribed by the doctor.

The symptoms often regress quickly after starting treatment.  If treatment is stopped too early, relapse is likely.

Preventive Measures

Preventive measures are highly dependent on causes :

  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Strengthening the immune system through healthy diet and adequate exercise.
  • In public restrooms, do not sit on the toilet seat.
  • Condom use
  • Cotton underwear and light clothes and ventilated
  • After the issue of saddles, cleaning from the front to the rear
  •  In case of appearance of vaginal discharge, using a swab of plain yogurt.
  • Always use your own towel and not to keep a wet bathing suit on you.
  • Use towels or panty liners with pores
